2) Working with Employees and Families in Poverty
(Poverty Education: For Human Resources Professionals, Business Owners, Executives, Employees, Families, and
the Community – Combined Group)
"It would be an injustice to ignore the backgrounds (handicaps) and daily challenges of employees and families working and living in poverty, and expect them to work the same way as employees with more resources would," says Ty Howard.
Ty Howard grew up in a high-poverty community in South Baltimore, Maryland, known as Cherry Hill, and spent five of his early childhood in foster care as a ward of the State of Maryland. He has lived in, still sees, and can strongly relate to the ugly impact of poverty on employees, students, and families who live in and press through it daily. Employees who come to work hungry from not having dinner or breakfast, tired from having to work the two and three jobs to support their families, frustrated from falling behind again and again on bills, ashamed because their families cannot afford to buy the same quality things or resources as others, fighting multiple forms of addiction and struggle, lacking resources and elevating opportunities, and violated from being put in unsafe situations. There are ways employers, executives, managers, human resources professionals, and community leaders and activists can partner to successfully address this, while maintaining high expectations for their employees' livelihood, work-life productivity, self-esteem, and future.
A Cultural Divide: Helping Employers, Leaders, Professionals and Communities Address Social and Economic Challenges...
